Forming part of an international movement, this amazing relay pays tribute to cancer survivors as well as those who care for them and the communities involved. Everyone in the community and those visiting Rustenburg during this time has the opportunity to come together and participate in the ongoing and ever-present fight against cancer, as well as honour loved ones who are still fighting or have fought cancer in the past.
The CANSA Relay for Life movement takes place from the 31st of August – the 1st of September at the Rustenburg Golf Club and helps raise much-needed funds for cancers of all types, while encouraging regions nearby to come together and do the same. This overnight team event is planned to be fun, motivational and welcoming of all ages, while also being volunteer-driven and community-owned – bring your loved ones along and stand together against cancer.
Relay for Life
The Relay will involve forming groups of between 10-15 people (these could be friends, neighbours, co-workers or simply members of the community) – each team needs to nominate a minimum of 1 team member who will walk around the track at all times for 12-24 hours, symbolizing how cancer does not slumber or sleep. For travellers visiting the Rustenburg area for this event, the inviting 5-star Tshiberry Bed & Breakfast provides 5-star accommodation and friendly services.
Kicking things off is a meaningful Survivors Lap which aims to honour cancer survivors as well as their caregivers and family. Another special part of the Relay for Life event is the Luminaria Ceremony that takes place after sunset and can only be described as heartfelt and moving – here, loved ones pay tribute to those still fighting against cancer, those who have beaten cancer as well as those who have lost their lives to cancer. Luminaria bags represent these individual struggles and are lit with candles, encircling the track. For the CANSA Relay for Life, teams camp out overnight around the track and will be able to enjoy entertainment and camaraderie together.
