An exciting show taking place over 3 days at the Lebone II – College of the Royal Bafokeng, the Sarafina! production has already generated tons of hype among locals and looks forward to educating and captivating an audience made up of all ages and interests. This amazing musical has been very inspirational and encouraging to a number of young South Africans and has also become a well known story across the globe.
Sarafina! is an excellent South African musical that was originally written by Mbogeni Ngema in the year 1988. This story follows a rebellious spirit, an ambitious young girl by the name of Sarafina, in the 1970’s and 1980’s during the youth uprisings of Soweto – these uprisings were at times violent and heartbreaking, all the while intending to challenge the apartheid government and Bantu education system. In the play, Sarafina is motivated by her teacher to make a difference and together with her friends and classmates dreams of a better tomorrow, during a time of political awakening and opposition toward apartheid. Although close to home, the play is well known on a local and international scale and is considered timeless.
From Wednesday 15th August to Friday 17th August, Sarafina! will be gracing the stage at Lebone II College in Phokeng, close to Rustenburg in the North West province – this is a great opportunity for a cultural experience that channels creative energy and passion, while also providing insight into our countries past. Talented local actors and singers have come together to make this showcasing of Sarafina! one to remember.
